Why “House Church?”

Simply put: We long to see God’s Power again…we long to see God MOVE again. The modern evangelical, protestant, Catholic church (the institutional church) looks very different than the church we see in the First Century. The Institutional church will often put its self interest above the Great Commission…it has bills to pay.

At AHF, we are seeking to “get back to our roots”…to the church of the New Testament, founded by the Apostles. This is more of an issue with Orthopraxy (correct practice) than it is Orthodoxy (correct doctrine).

The fundamental doctrines on salvation and the nature of God, found in the modern institutional church are for the most part sound (and in many churches…VERY SOUND). The issue is one of execution (how to you practice your faith in a gathering of believers). After considering the complications of trying to implement this in an existing church structure, it became obvious it could not work.

In Luke 5:36-39, Jesus said:  “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.‘”

The real problem in trying to transform an existing church is that BOTH church and vision will be a casualty. We cannot put NEW wine into OLD wineskins. You will tear the old wineskin open and you will spill your new wine onto the ground. The other issue we see is people are comfortable where they are…and if they’ve been in an old wineskin…they want to remain there.

Think of the way we are doing things at AHF as “new wine”…and think of our venue as “new wine skins.” Old wine is fine…as are old wine skins. However, God is doing a “new work” and for that…you need a new container. That new container is AHF.
