Praying for the Lost

Evangelism – Praying for the Lost

During this segment of the APT prayer time, we focus on the lost. We will petition the Lord of all Creation for souls.

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.” – John 6:44

  • Prayer for the leaders of AHF to become mighty evangelists, sharing the love of Christ to all.
  • Pray for open doors to share the Gospel.
  • Prayer that all who are involved in AHF will be moved with the urgency to share Christ with all within their sphere of influence (family, friends, neighbors and strangers).
  • Pray that those who attend AHF meetings, who may not know Christ as Savior and Lord, will be touched by God’s power and drawn into saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for all believers who attend AHF…that doors of utterance will be opened for them….and that they would live Holy lives before the lost.
  • It is God’s will that we should pray for the lost.
    • In I Timothy 2:1-4 we read, “I exhort therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”
  • Remember the lost are blind to the Gospel.
    • I Corinthians 2:14 – “But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
    • II Corinthians 4:3-4 – “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost; In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
  • Remember the lost are in bondage.
    • II Timothy 2:25-26 – “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”
    • 1:13 – “Those that are lost are held in bondage by Satan. He seeks with all his might to keep them in his grasp, that they might live and die in disobedience to God. In essence, the lost are incarcerated by Satan in his domain of darkness.”
  • Remember the lost are going to hell. We need to grasp the eternal nature of this struggle and stop spending more time praying saints out of heaven than we do sinners out of hell.
    • John 3:36 – “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.”
  • Pray with Praise And Thanksgiving
    • Psalm 100:4 – “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”
    • I Timothy 2:1 – “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men.”
  • Thank God for our own salvation. In most cases, someone prayed for you. “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ. . .” (II Corinthians 5:18a)
  • Thank God for His redemptive work.
    • “And he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” (I John 2:2) (I John 2:2)
  • Thank God for allowing you to join him in his redemptive work.
    • “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation.” ( II Corinthians 5:18)
  • Pray According To the Promises of God
    • God desires to save people:
    • “God wants all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of truth.”( I Timothy 2:4)
    • “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:9)
    • We can have confidence in our prayers for the lost because they are according to the will of God.
    • “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us; And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”( I John 5:14-15) I John 5:14-15)
  • Pray With the Intent of Others Being Involved in the Harvest
    • Evangelistic Praying not only involves praying for the lost, but it involves praying for the laborers. Matthew records that when Jesus saw a vast crowd in need of the Gospel He was moved with compassion and He commanded
    • His disciples to “ask of the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” There is a definite connection between our praying and His sending.
    • When we make application of this text to the individual(s) we are praying for, we can pray to the Lord of the harvest that He would place someone into the lost person’s path to share the Gospel, to water spiritual seed already sown or help to bring in the harvest.
  • The scripture gives some specific prayers to pray for laborers:
    • Ask the Lord to send laborers into the harvest. – “Therefore said he unto them, the harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest.” (Luke 10:2)
    • Ask the Lord for opportunities to witness. – “Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ., for which I am also in bonds.” (Colossians 4:3)
    • Ask the Lord for boldness for the messenger. –
      • “And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel; For which I am an ambassador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” (Ephesians 6:19-20)
      • “And now, Lord, behold their threatenings; and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word.” (Acts 4:29) (Acts 4:29)
    • Ask the Lord for clarity in presenting the gospel. – “That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.” (Colossians 4:4)
    • Ask the Lord to focus the hearts of his people –
      • “Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.” (Acts 13:1-3)
    • Ask God to grant you the courage to be willing to be the answer to our prayer. – Jesus instructed the disciples to pray for laborers in Matthew 9:38. In the same context Matthew 10:1, the disciples are called and sent out as an answer to the prayer
  • PRAYING FOR THE LOST
    • That God will draw them to Him
    • Receptive Hearts
      • In the parable of the sower (Luke 8:5, 12), the seed that fell beside the road and it was trampled under foot, and the birds of the air ate it up. When Jesus explained it He said the seed is the word of God and the seed that fell beside the road represents those who heard the Word. The devil then takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved. We need to pray that God would prepare the heart so that the seed would take root.
    • Spiritual Eyes and Ears Opened. – “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost; In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”(II Corinthians 4:3-4) Only God can open their eyes.
    • That they will hear God Speak
      • “For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted and I should heal them.” (Matthew 13:15)
      • ”That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that god hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10)
      • “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:14)
    • They will accept God’s Attitude towards their sin (Repent)
      • This will require that they admit they are sinners who face judgment and are in need of the righteousness of Jesus. The Christian, on the other hand, with God’s attitude toward sin, with be proactive. The role of the Holy Spirit is to convince of sin:
        • “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” (John 16:8)
      • That they will be “Released to Believe”
        • “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” (II Timothy 2:25-26)
        • That God would grant repentance, then the lost individual will come to their senses and escape the trap.
      • That God will destroy any barriers and strongholds in the individual’s life that would keep them from Christ.
        • “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh; For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds.” (II Corinthians 10:3-4)
        • Praying specifically for a lost individual is warfare. Satan will go to any extent to keep a person lost and in his kingdom. We are involved in praying for and sharing with individuals who need to be rescued from the kingdom of darkness and transferred to the kingdom of His dear son . . .
          • “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”(Colossians 1:13)
        • In this spiritual warfare we do not fight with weapons of flesh, but with mighty weapons of God. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces in the heavenly realms.”
          • “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12)
        • Pray for a Transforming Life
          • “I beseech you therefore, brethern, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your minds, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable, and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:1-2) (Romans 12:1-2)
        • That all False religion, pride, a sinful habits or other barriers, strongholds, footholds, etc, would be destroyed
